Forum Highlights Student Counselling Services

The Student Counselling Center at SQU organized the first forum of counseling specialists and support services staff at the Higher Education Institutions, under the title, “Towards Improving Psychological Counseling Services in Higher Education Institutions". The forum was held under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Suad Bint Mohammed Al-Lawati, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, College of Education and Vice-President of the State Council. Around 110 specialists and support services staff from various universities and higher educational in the Sultanate participated in the forum.

The forum was aimed at developing the counseling services offered to students in higher education institutions and raise them at par with international professional standards to achieve academic success and compatibility with the university life of students through awareness and enrichment of knowledge of professional cadres that provide support services and support psychological counseling and guidance. It sought to raise awareness of the importance of student counselling services in higher education institutions, improving the professional skills of counselors, and providing counseling services according to professional standards.

Dr. Maha Al Ani, Director of Student Counseling Center delivered a speech about  the establishment of the Center and various programs provided by the center which include counseling and guidance services which help students to cope with university’s requirements. She said that the Centre has developed a practical training program on ethical standards and policies of counseling profession. The ethical Code, approved by the American Counseling Association, was developed and amended in accordance with the Omani society's specificity to improve the psychology and Counseling profession and maintain providing high level of Counseling and professional services

A video was presented during the event about the Student Counselling Center and included its main objectives, services and activities. The forum included 4 sessions; university counseling centers (the Student Guidance Center), the ethical code of the psychological counseling profession, the policy of student counseling and a guide on working in the field of counseling services.
