Sultan Qaboos University is hosting a group of Omani and international artists residing in the Sultanate of Oman over a full week, from 5 to 9 April 2026, as part of the “Art and Place” event held at the Botanical Garden. This marks the first gathering of its kind in Oman dedicated to environmental art, offering a unique artistic experience that highlights the relationship between creativity and the environment, while opening new horizons for contemporary artistic expression.
The event features the participation of 11 artists specialising in environmental art from Oman, alongside international contributions from resident artists representing Hungary, Algeria and Egypt, creating a cultural convergence that reflects a diversity of artistic perspectives and experiences.
Organised by the Department of Art Education, under the supervision of the research group and the Art Colours Group, and in collaboration with the College of Science, the event forms part of ongoing efforts to support artistic creativity and promote environmental awareness within the community.
The gathering offers a live, interactive experience in which artists become part of the creative process in front of the audience, providing a rare opportunity to observe the development of artworks within their natural setting. Students from the Group are also participating alongside the artists in a rich, hands-on experience aimed at developing their practical skills and enhancing their creative abilities through direct engagement.
The event seeks to highlight the role of art in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability, while supporting Omani artists and fostering cultural exchange with international artists residing in Oman. It also aims to connect art with place and nature without disturbing ecological balance, offering an engaging artistic experience for students and visitors alike.
This initiative reflects SQU’s broader role in supporting artistic innovation and strengthening environmental and cultural awareness. As a temporary environmental art event, it provides a space that harmonises knowledge and nature in line with the principles of sustainability and contemporary art.
It also underscores the importance of environmental art as a medium for expressing contemporary issues and building connections between people and place, in an experience that brings together beauty, awareness and community engagement.
