The College of Medicine and Health Sciences has announced that its BSc in Biomedical Sciences with Clinical Training has been internationally reaccredited for the second time after meeting the required standards and criteria. This marks the programme’s third consecutive international accreditation cycle, covering the period 2025–2029.

This achievement followed an international external quality assurance assessment conducted by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) in the United Kingdom, which was officially approved by the Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education on April 8, 2025.The institute officially confirmed that the programme had successfully fulfilled all the requirements for reaccreditation.

The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) in the United Kingdom is one of the world’s leading professional institutes specialising in biomedical science. Its accreditation is recognised by the Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education, reflecting the programme’s academic excellence and alignment with internationally recognised standards in biomedical science education.

Prof. Rashid bin Khalfan Al-Abri, Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, said:

“This achievement once again affirms the College’s commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement, as well as its alignment with Oman Vision 2040 and SQU’s Strategic Plan to enhance the quality of education, learning, and research.

The BSc in Biomedical Sciences with Clinical Training is among the first programmes in the Sultanate of Oman to receive accreditation from IBMS in the United Kingdom. The programme’s third consecutive international accreditation demonstrates its quality and the excellence of its graduates, the expertise of its faculty members, and the collaboration with healthcare institutions in clinical training, in addition to the College’s continued commitment to implementing international best practices and standards.”

The Dean added:

“This achievement is the result of a collective effort involving the University administration, College administration, faculty members, staff, students, graduates, partners, and all stakeholders. It reflects the College’s continued commitment to preparing graduates who possess the professional and scientific competencies needed to contribute to and support Oman’s healthcare sector, while further strengthening SQU’s position as a leading academic institution at both the regional and international levels.” 

Dr. Nasar bin Yousuf Al-Wahaibi, Head of the Department of the Biomedical Sciences, said:

“This achievement followed by the preparation of a comprehensive self-evaluation report for reaccreditation, as well as the site visit conducted by the IBMS assessment team last year.  The institute officially confirmed that the programme had successfully fulfilled all the requirements for reaccreditation, reflecting the programme’s academic quality, the competence of its graduates, and the College’s commitment to continuous improvement in accordance with international best practices and professional standards.”

Dr. Shadia bint Mohamed Al-Bahlani, Head of the College’s Quality Assurance and Academic Accreditation Unit, explained that this achievement marks another milestone in the programme’s journey toward international accreditation. The programme first received accreditation for the period 2015-2029, then successfully completed its first reaccreditation cycle for 2020-2024, and has now achieved its second international reaccreditation for the period 2025-2029. 

She added that this achievement enhances the regional and international reputation of SQU and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences in the field of biomedical sciences. It also opens broader opportunities for academic and professional collaboration with institutions and experts in more than 70 countries, while enhancing the programme’s graduates’ opportunities for employment and professional mobility internationally.
