Deanship Holds 3 Minutes Thesis Competition

04 Dec, 2019 |

The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies at Sultan Qaboos University organized the fifth season of the 3-minute Thesis Competition (3MT) on Tuesday, 3 December 2019. The competition, which started in 2015 at the University, has gained wide recognition, as it is a great opportunity to share postgraduate research in a competitive context. Not only do postgraduate students present their theses, showing its scope and significance, but they also do it in a competitive manner in three minutes. By doing so, they are now able to communicate their research precisely and competently to their future employer and other potential enterprises.

The 3- minute Thesis Competition (3MT) was an international competition, which was originally developed by the University of Queensland in Australia to allow thesis-based graduate students to deliver a compelling presentation on their research and its significance in less than three minutes. Today, there are 3MT university competitors in more than 120 universities across 19 countries and Sultan Qaboos University is one of these universities.

All Sultan Qaboos University graduate students who are enrolled in a thesis based Master`s or PhD program or who graduated from such programs less than one year from the last date of application submission are eligible. Master`s students need to have presented the “second” seminar of their program and doctoral students must have completed at least 2 years of research towards their degree in order to be eligible to compete.

In addition to a certificate of participation, in each competition, three awards are conferred. This year, Rajaa Khalifa Al Hadhrami won the best presentation award for her thesis titled “Diabetes Self-Management among Adult Omanis with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus”. Abubaker Sayed Mohamed Omer won the runner up (second best presentation) for the thesis entitled “Designing and testing a spray-type direct-contact dehumidifier for the Seawater Greenhouse (SWGH)”. Maria Yousuf Al Shirawi won the people’s award for her thesis “An Experimental Investigation of Impact of Different Surface Mineralogy on Wettability Alteration Using Stearic Acid”.
