Sultan Qaboos University hosted the opening of the 11th Annual Research Forum organised by the Omani Mathematics Committee. This year’s edition is held in celebration of the 2025 International Day of Women in Mathematics, with the participation of distinguished academics, researchers, and emerging scientific talents from Oman and abroad.

The forum was inaugurated under the patronage of Honourable Dr. Zuwaina bint Saif Al-Maskari, member of the State Council, in the presence of a number of academic figures and representatives from higher education institutions. The programme featured a specialised international research workshop titled “Algebra and Geometry”, during which several leading female researchers in the field of mathematics presented advanced scientific perspectives on abstract algebra, geometric modelling, and the application of mathematics in addressing real-world challenges.

As part of its commitment to engaging the educational community, the Oman Mathematics Committee also hosted a special lecture for female school students entitled “Mathematics in Islamic Art”. Delivered by Prof. Nazife Koca from the Department of Physics at the College of Science, the lecture showcased the beauty of mathematical patterns in Islamic heritage, sparking curiosity and deepening students’ appreciation of the creativity inherent in the discipline.

The forum also featured a scientific art exhibition titled “Fibonacci: The Hidden Link Between Mathematics, Art, and Creativity”, presented by students from Umm Habiba Basic Education School (Grades 10–12). The exhibition drew notable interest from attendees, thanks to its innovative methods of linking mathematical concepts with visual arts, music, financial markets, graphic design, and biology, highlighting a growing awareness of the role of mathematics in creative expression and everyday experiences.

Reflecting on its ongoing efforts, the Oman Mathematics Committee reaffirmed its commitment to its national and scientific mission in support of the Oman Vision 2040. This includes nurturing research and innovation talent, improving the quality of mathematics education, and expanding academic partnerships at both regional and international levels. Through its weekly online research seminars, the Committee continues to foster scientific exchange. These seminars serve as interactive knowledge platforms that empower Omani researchers and build bridges of collaboration with academics from institutions across the GCC, the Arab world, and beyond. By attracting renowned scientists from around the globe, these sessions enrich dialogue and exchange of expertise, forming a dynamic digital gateway for global mathematical discourse and reinforcing Oman’s growing presence in the international mathematics community.

On the regional and Arab stage, the Oman Mathematics Committee continues to support mathematics-related initiatives. Most recently, it accepted an invitation from the Egyptian Mathematics Committee to participate in their celebration of the International Day of Women in Mathematics, held at Cairo University on 10 May 2025. Dr. Majda bint Talib Al-Hinai, Chair of the Committee, gave a presentation entitled “The Omani Mathematics Committee: Leading Excellence in Mathematical Research and Educational Development in the Sultanate of Oman”. She also participated in a panel discussion on empowering Arab women in mathematics through digital networks and institutional support, highlighting Oman’s experience in building an inclusive and stimulating scientific environment.

In a landmark announcement reflecting the importance of mathematics within the national academic landscape, SQU declared that 10 October will be marked annually as Mathematics Day at the University. The upcoming edition will explore the theme “Emerging Technologies as a Driving Force in Shaping the Future of Mathematics Education”, a step that reflects SQU’s vision of integrating modern mathematical teaching and learning with digital and technological transformation.

This forum is part of a broader series of pioneering initiatives undertaken by the Oman Mathematics Committee, underscoring its leading role in building an advanced knowledge society, empowering research talent, and fostering a culture of scientific innovation. These efforts align with Oman’s aspirations for a knowledge-based economy and a dynamic, competitive society. The Committee, a national body operating under the auspices of SQU, represents the Sultanate of Oman within the International Mathematical Union. Through its efforts, Oman has attained full membership in the Union, officially announced at the global meeting held in Germany, marking growing international recognition of Oman’s scientific contributions to this vital field.
