Inspiring Inclusion: Third Forum Highlights Success Stories
The Student Counselling Centre held its third forum under the theme “Will and Success: Supporting the Journey of Students with Disabilities at the University”. The event took place in Lecture Hall 1, under the patronage of Dr. Rayya bint Salim Al-Mandhri, Dean of Student Affairs, with the presence of a number of students, academic and administrative staff, as well as individuals interested in the field of disability.
The forum's opening ceremony featured active participation by a distinguished group of students with physical and visual impairments, who contributed to hosting the programme and reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an. Attendees were also introduced to several students’ inspiring success stories.
The forum reflects SQU’s commitment to empowering students with disabilities and promoting an inclusive academic environment that respects diversity and supports both academic and social success. It also reaffirms SQU’s dedication to providing a supportive educational setting that enables students with disabilities to thrive both academically and socially.
The forum aims to achieve a range of objectives, including raising awareness of the rights of students with disabilities at SQU, highlighting the importance of psychological and social support in helping them adjust to university life, and discussing the academic, social, and psychological challenges they face. It also seeks to explore supportive solutions and technologies that facilitate the learning process, share successful experiences between students and support entities, and assess the suitability of the University’s technical environment and facilities in meeting the needs of students with disabilities.
The academic papers presented during the forum shed light on several key areas, most notably: university programmes dedicated to supporting students with disabilities, relevant policies and administrative procedures, and assistive technologies used in education. The forum also showcased inspiring success stories of students of determination who have overcome challenges and achieved outstanding academic accomplishments.
The presentations were delivered by a group of academics and specialists from within and outside SQU. Key themes addressed included: university programmes and services supporting students with disabilities; academic and administrative challenges they encounter; the role of assistive technology and applications in empowering students; the impact of psychological and social support on enhancing the university experience; and success stories and role models among students with disabilities.
