SQU Hosts Workshop on Gulf Joint Work
As part of the GCC Days, Sultan Qaboos University hosted a workshop on the joint work of the GCC countries in economic and development fields. The workshop, held on 23 October 2019, was aimed spreading awareness among academics and students about the joint work of the GCC states.
Salem Al-Ojaili, Head of the GCC Common Market, gave a presentation on the achievements of the GCC joint efforts in the economic and developmental fields. The most important achievements of the GCC common market in the economic field include setting up of a number of joint Gulf institutions and organizations. These include GCC Standardization Organization, Customs Union for GCC, Gulf Investment Corporation, Commercial Arbitration Center, GCCNET (ATM network), GCC Interconnection Authority, Statistical Center, Monetary Council, and technical secretariat office for combating harmful practices in international trade.
Dr. Al Mukhtar bin Saif Al-Abri, Head of the Department of Economics and Finance, College of Economics and Political Science, Sultan Qaboos University, gave a presentation on the future of economic integration. He also addressed the stages and steps of economic integration in general, in addition to some factors of success of economic blocks by reviewing some international models of economic blocs.
Jassim Al Sakran, a specialist in the Office of the Gulf and Economic and Development Authority said that the remarkable achievements in the economic and developmental sectors reflect the keenness of the GCC countries to promote the common Gulf integration in various fields. “There is no doubt that the integration efforts sometimes face some obstacles that the GCC countries are continuously addressing”, he said.
