The second edition of the Arabic Language and Omani Culture programme was launched at SQU under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Dr. Fahd bin Al Julanda Al Said, the Vice Chancellor. The event was also attended by His Excellency the Ambassador of the Russian Federation and His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea.
The opening ceremony featured a speech by Mahmood bin Abdullah Al-Kindi, Director of the International Cooperation Office, who emphasised the significance of learning and knowledge in building civilisations. Highlighting the role of reading and education in fostering intercultural communication, he noted the success of the programme’s first edition, which involved 80 students from Russia and South Korea. Participants in the inaugural programme gained foundational Arabic language skills, applied them in practical contexts, and explored Oman’s rich history and culture through lectures and field trips.
This year’s edition includes 77 participants—61 students from Russia and 16 from South Korea—running from January 20 to February 20, 2025.
Dr. Faisal bin Saif Al-Saadi, Assistant Dean for Training and Community Service at the College of Arts and Social Sciences, noted the students’ enthusiasm for learning Arabic and immersing themselves in Omani culture. Alongside attending classes, participants will explore Oman’s cities, traditions, customs, and heritage through weekly field trips. SQU, represented by the International Cooperation Office and the Arabic Language and Literature Department of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, will provide comprehensive support to the students.
Dr. Al-Saadi highlighted the deep cultural ties between Oman, Russia, and South Korea, underscoring shared values of respect for diversity, pride in cultural identity, and a commitment to preserving languages and traditions.
The programme is organised by the International Cooperation Office at Sultan Qaboos University, in coordination with the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the College of Arts and Social Sciences. It is held in collaboration with Kazan University in Russia and Busan and Dankook Universities in South Korea.
This initiative aims to enhance Arabic language skills in speaking, reading, and writing by integrating international students into an Arabic-speaking environment. It also seeks to introduce Oman’s cultural heritage and tourist attractions while strengthening SQU’s ties with international educational institutions. The programme combines short courses in Arabic language instruction with cultural activities and visits to iconic landmarks across the Sultanate of Oman.
