SQU Celebrates Omani Women’s Day

Sultan Qaboos University celebrated Omani Women's Day, which falls on 17 October each year, under the patronage of H.H. Sayyidah Dr. Mona bint Fahad Al Said, Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Cooperation. In her speech at the ceremony, Her Highness said that the characteristics of the age we live in have provided women with a wider scope of work and enabled them to specialize in the areas of vital importance to the society. She said that the university is proud of Omani women workforce who excel in their professions such as academics, administrators, physicians, technicians, nurses and so on, at the same time preserving the traditions and values of the Omani society.

The number of female employees in the university currently stands at 1,319. As on 2017, the number of Omani women who have received fellowships in medicine has reached 35. The number of women with PhD degree is 106, those with a master's degree is 289, and the number of bachelor degree holders in the university is 508.

While cerebrating the sixth edition of the Omani Women’s Day, Sayyidah Dr. Mona said that this celebration is not only about get together and dialogue, but also about taking a different approach, especially in a fast-paced world. Her Highness stressed, that to better prepare women to take their roles with all merit requires us to arm ourselves with science and knowledge, and to employ that knowledge to everything that benefits us in our lives and our future.

Women employees from all colleges, units and centers attended the event. The ceremony included a presentation of a film about the Omani Women's Day entitled "Achievements embracing the sky", national songs and music pieces, in addition to competitions and raffle draws.
