In a step that reflects the harmony between industrial innovation and academic research, the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences hosted a specialised evaluation session for the innovative “date flakes” and “date balls” developed by Busoor company. These products represent a breakthrough in the food processing sector, having been developed using the Mabsli date powder, offering modern food solutions with an authentic heritage touch.

This project extends the Royal Grant awarded at SQU to Dr. Nasser bin Abdullah Al-Habsi from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences. The grant focuses on developing innovative food products from low-value busoor (unripe dates), which are often underutilised despite their promising nutritional and economic potential. The initiative aims to maximise their value and transform them into high-value products that contribute to economic diversification and strengthen food security systems.

This direction reflects strong national support for investing in local resources and enhancing their added value, contributing to sustainable food systems and fostering innovation within the food industry sector.

Quality Matching International Standards

During the session, the products underwent rigorous evaluation by experts and specialists. They stood out as high-quality, healthy alternatives, being entirely free from gluten and lactose. This makes them an ideal choice for those pursuing a healthy lifestyle, as well as a strong competitor in markets that prioritise natural and innovative products.

Strategic Partnerships Towards Commercial Production

The session comes at a time when Busoor company is preparing to launch its production lines on a commercial scale. The company is advancing strategic discussions with the Oman Investment Authority and the Oman Food Investment Holding Company. These discussions aim to strengthen the presence of Omani products within food supply chains and transform local innovations into economically viable ventures.

A Gateway for Investment

The outcomes of this scientific and technical evaluation are expected to serve as a decisive reference and a strong incentive for investors. The session reflects the confidence of academic institutions in the quality of the innovation and confirms the product’s high readiness for entry into both local and international markets. Date flakes and date balls are anticipated to attract wide interest, given their added value to the Omani date palm and their alignment with the growing global demand for healthy snack options.

This collaboration between Busoor and SQU signals the beginning of a new shift that places Omani dates at the heart of the global food innovation landscape.
