The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the College of Engineering organised the first workshop on satellite launch vehicles at Sultan Qaboos University, held in Lecture Hall (6) under the patronage of Professor Amer bin Saif Al-Hinai, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies and Research.

The workshop aimed to highlight the ongoing space-related educational and research activities at SQU, as well as introduce the Space Engineering Laboratory currently being established at the University with support from the Oman National Space Programme at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and to showcase its future capabilities.

The event also sought to strengthen collaboration with the Race to Space and ART Space UK programmes at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, providing opportunities for joint educational and research initiatives. The workshop additionally witnessed the launch of the SQU Student Rocketry Club, which encourages students to engage in practical projects in the fields of space and rocket technologies.

The workshop further aimed to raise awareness and interest among students, academic staff, and national stakeholders in the field of space engineering, contributing to the development of Oman’s growing space ecosystem. It also provided a platform for knowledge exchange and the establishment of future collaborations between Omani universities and international partners.

This initiative supports SQU’s national role in space-related education and research, while highlighting the new Space Engineering Laboratory and contributing to long-term academic capacity-building. It also helps prepare skilled Omani talent in rocket technologies, satellite engineering, and emerging space sciences, in alignment with the aspirations of Oman Vision 2040.
