Empowering Students through Real-World Energy Challenges

18 Jun, 2025 |

Sultan Qaboos University concluded the second edition of the ‘Energising New Markets’ programme, hosted in collaboration with Oman Shell, marking a significant step in our continued efforts to align academic learning with national development priorities and the realities of the modern energy sector.

The four-day initiative, held on campus, brought together a select group of students from the College of Economics and Political Science and the College of Engineering. Through interactive sessions, students explored practical aspects of renewable energy markets and business strategy, applying Shell’s CAR framework (Capacity, Achievement, and Relationships) to real-world challenges.

Working in cross-disciplinary teams, participants tackled a commercial expansion case study linked to Shell’s ‘Powering Progress’ strategy. The programme combined technical knowledge with soft skills training, supported by mentors from both SQU and Shell, and tailored to address identified skillset gaps among graduates entering the job market.

On the final day, students presented their business plans before a panel of senior representatives from SQU and Shell. Their pitches reflected a strong grasp of strategic thinking and innovation, demonstrating how classroom knowledge can translate into real-world impact. “This collaboration stands as a pioneering model of synergy between academic institutions and the industry sector,” noted Professor Salim Al-Harthi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Community Service. “It creates a practical learning environment that strengthens students’ abilities in problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability; skills that are increasingly vital in today’s fast-evolving economy.”

Originally launched in 2024, Energizing New Markets forms part of Shell’s In-Country Value strategy to empower Omani youth and develop a future-ready national workforce. With two more editions planned for 2025, the programme is poised to offer even more students a gateway into industry-focused learning and leadership.

This partnership continues to affirm SQU’s commitment to equipping students with the tools to succeed beyond the classroom, helping to shape the future of energy and innovation in Oman.
