Lecture Highlights Evolution of Judiciary in Oman

On Tuesday, 24 September 2019, the College of Law at SQU hosted H.E. Dr. Issa Hamad Al Azri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, who gave a lecture entitled “Development of the Judiciary in the Sultanate” that marked the beginning of the academic activities of the college for the year 2019-2020.

The lecture touched on the development of the judiciary in the Sultanate. “Judiciary has been one of the most important institutions of the country throughout the ages. Profession in judiciary has always been viewed with importance and respect. Judges play a key role in the religious, political and social spheres of life, empowering the importance of the judiciary in relation to justice, compassion and equality”, he said. Dr. Al Azri also touched on the involvement of of Islamic scholars in shaping civil and criminal jurisprudence. He explained the procedure of selection of judges in judicial service in the Sultanate, the status of the judiciary in Oman before and after the Renaissance, establishment of courts in Oman, organization of administrative system in Oman issued in 1975 and the role and functions of the Ministry of Justice.
