Dr. Mohamed Essa, Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition of the College of Agricultural & Marine Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University recently co-edited a book that discusses personalized food therapy for Autism. The book titled “Personalized Food Intervention and Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder Management” under Part of the Advances in Neurobiology book series (NEUROBIOL, volume 24) (IBSN Print – 978-3-030-30401-0, and ISBN online – 978-3-030-30402-7 https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-30402-7#about). This book contains 26 chapters, which describe from overview of autism, genomics, role of foods and nutrition in autism and recommendations for food intake intervention written by well-known researchers all over from USA, Australia, India and GCC. The co-editor of the book is Dr. M. Walid Qoronfleh, Director of Research & Policy from World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) of Qatar Foundation, Qatar.
This book mainly emphases on implications of traditional and processed foods for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) intervention and management. Abundant phytonutrients and pharmacologically active compounds in edible natural products and diet could impact and offer protection to neuronal dysfunction that occurs due to ASD. The neuro-protective effects of various fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds phytochemicals, and other natural bioactive ingredients against ASD and related conditions are discussed. Topics such as the possible neuro-protective mechanism of action of these foods and the therapeutic role of antioxidants in relation to ASD are addressed. This book also highlights the scope of using anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants to promote neurogenesis and improve other symptoms in ASD.
