Major decisions are among the very critical decisions that students make when they need to select a major at university since this sets the course of the future and future chances of careers. Technological innovation, globalisation, and artificial intelligence have affected the current, fast-evolving world, and consequently, the labour market. These developments have altered the qualifications and skills needed by employers of graduates. (Wiley Online Library, 2025).

The Importance of Transferable Skills in the Labour Market

Workers in the contemporary world are finding that transferable skills are becoming particularly important to employers in addition to academic credentials. The list of skills that have become a necessity in almost any industry includes communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and digital literacy. Expectations towards universities are that students have been trained to work in realistic work situations, not just on theoretical knowledge. Recent research has revealed that career flexibility and life-long learning play a big role in ensuring that graduates have high probabilities of getting a job and succeeding in their career. (Lee et al., 2025).

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Career Choices

One of the most significant contributors to employment opportunities all over the world has been artificial intelligence. Digital technologies and automation are changing old professions and at the same time, new opportunities emerge demanding high levels of technical abilities. A study of trends in the labour market indicates an increasing demand of skills associated with artificial intelligence, data analysis, remote communication, and software development. It means that students need to make wise decisions regarding the relevance of their majors based on a particular degree offering technological knowledge and analytical skills that will be important in future hiring environments (Ahmadi et al., 2024).

The Role of Continuous Learning and Professional Certifications

Over the past few years, there has been a rise in the significance of professional certifications and online education platforms in enhancing employability. Non-traditional credentials are being considered by employers due to their display of hands-on skills and dedication to life-long learning. Online courses like Coursera, and LinkedIn Learning offer students to acquire specific knowledge that might not be adequately taught in universities. Experts indicate that graduates who couple university degrees with other credentials can have better career prospects and enhanced career mobility (Athey and Palikot, 2024).

In conclusion, many need to consider individual interests, as well as the needs of the labour market when selecting the right university major. The rapid changes in technologies and artificial intelligence have made adaptability, digital skills, and life-long learning more relevant.
