The Centre of Excellence in Marine Biotechnology organised the Fourth GCC Marine Biotechnology Conference: Emerging Opportunities and Future Perspectives at Al-Fahm Hall, University Cultural Centre. The event was held under the patronage of His Excellency Eng. Yaqoub bin Khalfan Al-Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources for Fisheries.
The conference serves as a scientific platform that brings together leading scientists, researchers, and industry representatives from Oman, the GCC, and around the world to discuss the latest developments and opportunities in the field of marine biotechnology.
Dr. Ahmed bin Ali Al-Alawi, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Marine Biotechnology and Chair of the Conference’s Main Committee, delivered the opening address. He emphasised that marine biotechnology lies at the heart of global efforts to tackle complex challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, and the sustainability of marine resources. He added that the world is witnessing a growing demand for innovative solutions in food security, clean energy, and high-value bio-based products, making investment in this sector a strategic necessity.
Dr. Al-Alawi noted that the timing of the conference is especially significant, as global statistics indicate that the marine biotechnology market exceeded USD 6.7 billion in 2024 and is expected to surpass USD 13 billion over the next decade, growing at an annual rate of about 7%. Despite this rapid global expansion, the Middle East and Africa’s contribution to the global market remains below 4%, highlighting the vast opportunities available for countries in the region to strengthen their investments and research capacity in this vital field.
He further explained that this triennial conference continues a strong scientific journey that began more than a decade ago, aiming to advance marine biotechnology across GCC countries and enhance research collaboration among universities, research institutions, and industry partners in the region.
This year’s edition features four keynote speakers and over forty scientific papers presented by distinguished scientists, researchers, and experts from thirteen countries across three continents. The wide-ranging participation reflects the growing reputation and scientific stature of the conference as a trusted platform that brings together experts and researchers from around the world.
