The Department of Community and Mental Health at the College of Nursing organised a symposium to mark World Mental Health Day under the theme “Mental Health and Addiction: Towards an Aware and Resilient Community”, held at the College of Nursing.
The event aimed to raise awareness of mental health issues, shed light on the impact of addiction on individuals and communities, highlight the latest approaches to prevention and treatment, and underscore the role of academic and community institutions in supporting psychological balance and promoting social well-being.
The symposium featured scientific and discussion sessions, as well as an awareness exhibition, with the participation of a distinguished group of experts and specialists in mental and social health from various sectors. It also included an exhibition on the dangers of drugs and addiction, organised in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police.
In her speech during the event, Dr. Khulood bint Rashid Al-Abri, Assistant Professor at the College of Nursing, emphasised that organising this symposium reflects SQU’s commitment to raising public awareness about mental health issues. She noted that mental health is not a luxury, but a matter that affects one’s stability, dignity and capacity to give.
She added that addiction represents one of the most pressing contemporary challenges facing societies, due to its psychological, economic and social consequences. She stressed the importance of joint efforts between individuals and institutions in prevention and treatment, affirming that awareness is the first line of defence and social cohesion is the strongest tool.
Dr. Huda bint Salim Al-Noumani, Dean of the College of Nursing, explained that the symposium serves as a scientific platform for exchanging expertise and perspectives on ways to enhance mental well-being and combat addiction. She praised the efforts of participants and supporting entities in making the event a success.
The symposium also featured a series of scientific and awareness presentations, including one by the The National Committee for Narcotics & Psychotropic Substances Affairs, delivered by Yahya bin Saleh Al-Riyami, Senior General Nurse specialising in mental health and member of the Committee’s Executive Office. The Royal Oman Police was represented by Captain Ahmed Al-Balushi, while the Muscat Taafi Centre and the Positive Vision Association showcased their contributions in health education and psychological support.
At the conclusion of the event, participants and supporting organisations were honoured, including Sohar International Bank and Muscat Pharmacy, in recognition of their contributions to supporting community initiatives and promoting social responsibility in the field of mental health.
