Diet, Lifestyle and Diseases Prevention

Sultan Qaboos University’s Department of Food Science and Nutrition organized a workshop to highlight the increase in Dietary related Human Chronic Diseases.

With research and scientific evidence demonstrating strong links between human diseases risk and the diet and lifestyle followed, the onus of diseases prevention is as much an individual effort as it is a community endeavor. One such community initiative was undertaken recently by the Food Science and Nutrition Department of the College of Agricultural & Marine Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) ; it organized a workshop on ‘Diet, Lifestyle and Diseases Prevention’ to address topics in nutrition and lifestyle in human diseases prevention, with relevance to Oman.

The workshop featured experts from different colleges of SQU, Nizwa University and Ministry of Health. Their papers covered topics ranging from functional foods to nutrition after diseases diagnosis as well as lifestyle modifications. Below are some of the perspectives provided by speakers on the subject: Malnutrition, phytonutrients, antioxidants, physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, traditional foods. The workshop was patronized by the dean of the college, Professor Abdulaah Al Sadi and chaired by Dr. Mohammed Al Khusaibi, Dr. Lyutha Al Subhi and Professor Mostafa Waly. Mrs. Farha Al Naaabi and the students’ society of FSN, under the supervision of Dr. Zahra Al Kharousi, played an active role in making the event a success.
