Sultan Qaboos University, represented by the Section for Students with Disabilities at the Deanship of Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Middle East College, organized "International Day of Persons with Disabilities" on 5 December. The event was held under the patronage of H.H. Sayyidah Dr. Mona Fahad Al Said, SQU Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Cooperation. The International Day for Persons with Disabilities is observed on 3 December to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The event included a discussion session in which Ali Al-Dhahiri, a student from the United Arab Emirates University, reviewed his University's experience in dealing with students with disabilities, speaking about the admission rate of students with disabilities, the services provided to them in the academic field and their participation in student activities.

Prof. Wadad Hilal Al Hashmi, Head of the Section for Students with Disabilities at the Deanship of Students Affairs spoke about the Deanship’s services to students with disabilities. Dr. Wajdi Wazzan, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for Special Needs at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, spoke about the training and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Mariam Salem Al Masrouri, Director of the Career Guidance Center at SQU focused on the role of the Center's services in promoting employment opportunities. She also reviewed the experiences of the Center in providing guidance services for people with disabilities. She elaborated on their experience in providing facilities and creating proper working environment that suits this category and touched upon the laws and legislations of the Ministry of Manpower concerning the employment of people with disabilities and the government orders to private sector institutions to employ persons from this category.

Mohammed Al Shareef from the Prince Sultan Center for Humanitarian Services spoke about the techniques that support persons with disabilities in rehabilitation based on his experience in the largest rehabilitation center in the Middle East. The event also hosted Sultan bin Nasser Al Ameri, President of the Omani Society for People with Hearing Disabilities.
