Researchers from the Life Science Unit at the College of Science have achieved a significant scientific milestone with the discovery and international recognition of a previously unknown plant species, Adenosciadium omanensis, adding to Oman’s rich botanical heritage and contributing to global knowledge of plant biodiversity.
The discovery was made through a series of field expeditions conducted by the College over the past three years as part of its commitment to advancing research and documenting Oman’s unique plant life. The newly identified species had not previously been recorded anywhere in the world and was subsequently named after Oman, the country where it was first discovered.

The plant is native to the limestone plateaus along Oman’s coastline, particularly in the eastern reaches of the Hajar Mountains. Its identification highlights the ecological importance of Oman’s diverse landscapes and their role in supporting unique and previously undocumented species.
Adenosciadium omanensis belongs to the Apiaceae family and is closely related to Adenosciadium arabicum, a species found in southern Oman and Yemen. However, detailed scientific analysis revealed distinct morphological characteristics that distinguish the new species from its closest relative. These include velvety leaves, kidney-shaped leaflets with serrated edges, a greater number of flowers, and differences in seed shape and size. Researchers believe that climatic conditions and environmental variations have played a key role in the evolution of these distinguishing features.
The discovery has been formally recognised through the publication of the species description in the Edinburgh Journal of Botany, one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed journals in plant taxonomy. The journal is associated with internationally renowned botanical collections and is widely respected for its contributions to the classification and documentation of plant species, particularly those from the Arabian Peninsula.
A reference specimen of Adenosciadium omanensis is preserved in the university’s Herbarium, which serves as the internationally recognised scientific repository for the species. The discovery represents an important contribution to ongoing efforts to document and conserve the flora of Oman and the wider Arabian Peninsula.
The Arabian Peninsula is recognised as one of the world’s major biodiversity hotspots. Continued botanical exploration and taxonomic research have increased the number of recorded plant species in Oman from approximately 1,300 in 2020 to around 1,440 today, including species newly recorded in Oman and others discovered for the first time globally.
While no local name or traditional uses have yet been identified for Adenosciadium omanensis, the discovery opens new avenues for research into its chemical properties, potential medicinal applications, and ecological significance.
