In cooperation with the Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law, the College of Law at Sultan Qaboos University is hosting the first edition of the Omani Moot Court Competition. The event will be held from 28 to 31 of March.
H.E Taleb Bin Miran Al Raisi, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law, said: "One of the objectives of the Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law is to disseminate this law among the universities in the Sultanate. Therefore, the Committee delivered a number of lectures at the University of Dhofar, the Diplomatic Institute and the Police Academy, while the Committee is preparing a program to give lectures to spread the law between universities across the Sultanate. "
In his speech, Dr. Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, Dean of the College of Law, said: “the College adopted the Omani Moot Court Competition, which is the first competition for law colleges in the Sultanate. The competition promotes the principles of scientific analysis and creative thinking in a stimulating academic environment, analyzing the legal text properly, as well as the art of writing legal memos.”
As many as 36 students are participating in the competition are divided into 6 teams; Dhofar University, A’Sharqiyah University, Buraimi University College, Al Zahra College For Women, Modern College of Business & Science and the College of Law, Sultan Qaboos University.
The arbitration committee consists of 13 members from distinguished legal figures including; Higher Judicial Institute, the Council of Administrative Affairs for the Judiciary, the Public Prosecution, the Omani Committee for International Humanitarian Law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as professors from the College of Law, Sultan Qaboos, Dhofar University and Al Zahra College For Women.
The competition aims to create a spirit of challenge among students, improve the necessary skills to prepare legal memoranda and oral pleadings. The competition also aims to strengthen the cooperation between the College of law at the University and its counterpart law colleges in the Sultanate.
