The official opening ceremony of the Independent Learning Center at Sultan Qaboos University was held on Sunday, 24 March 2019 under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Said bin Hamed Al-Robai, Secretary General of the Education Council. H.E. Dr. Ali bin Saud Al Bimani, Vice Chancellor of SQU, and other senior officials of the University attended the function. The Independent Learning Center (ILC) is looking forward to become a fertile learning environment that offers outstanding academic service and attracts students to refine their talents and develop their core skills to pursue lifelong learning. The Center contributes actively to providing academic support and support programs to students to raise their educational attainment and to refine their creative talents.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Magda Al Hinai, Director of ILC, said that to support students in their learning, and assist them in becoming more independent in their studies and more confident in their academic abilities, the ILC conducts many activates under different categories throughout the year.  “For instance, the Knowledge Leadership Seminars (KLS) are run twice each semester to arm SQU students with the power of knowledge, through addressing the newest topics in science, technology, economics, etc”.

The Study Skills Oasis (SSO) platform of the Centre helps the undergraduate students improve their basic study skills needed in higher education through a variety of workshops, motion graphics, printed infographics, and useful links to external learning resources. Topics covered by SSO workshops include independent learning skills, communication and interpersonal skills, cooperative learning skills, and more. For students unable to attend in-person, video recordings of these workshops are available at the ILC website and ILC YouTube channel. SSO outreach students with displays of infographics all around SQU bulletin boards.

The Educational Platforms organized by the Centre seeks to enrich students' talents and knowledge. Every academic year, the ILC runs workshops on diverse topics cooperation with different colleges at SQU, as well as government and private sectors on Oman.
