Bioethics Committee Discusses International Legislation on Paternity

The National Bioethics Committee met on Monday at Sultan Qaboos University under the leadership of H.E Dr. Ali bin Saud Al-Bimani, the Vice Chancellor of SQU. The third meeting of the committee discussed the proposals and views of the Committee regarding the international legislation of modern paternity and maternity, such as storage of ovum and sperm and its post-mortem use to obtain children after the death of the parents or one of them. The committee discussed on donation of gametes and fetuses and the transfer of "mitochondria" to treat some diseases.

The Committee representatives had participated in the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Bioethics (IGBC) and the 25th session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) in Paris, France.

The Committee also finalized the title of the second international conference on "Regulatory legislations on bioethics", which will be held on February 2, 2020. It decided to publish a document on the ethical principles of scientific publishing. The committee finalized a workshop on "Ethics of Scientific Publications", to be held on October 21, and discussed  the issue of the DNA document.

In addition, the Committee discussed solutions of requesting for approval by Bioethics Committees for students studying abroad who do not have bioethical committees in their institutions.
